European Union Might Retaliate to ‘Unjustified’ US Travel Restrictions, Spokesperson States
The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities contend the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become a facet of a far wider existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
