Together Can Be Streamed, and It Has the Power to Test Your Relationship.
We present a dare for partners in committed relationships who appreciate the horror genre: Get comfortable with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its online premiere on Hulu. Outwardly, it may seem like standard body horror, but within Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
A Directorial Debut Exploring The Nuances of Love
Together marks the debut feature-length film for director Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in reality in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a unique chemistry to their roles, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a enduring union.
The plot commences when Tim and Millie relocate from the urban environment to the country for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical narrative setup, of course, but that’s largely where the conventions end. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.
An Otherworldly Trigger
While walking near their rural residence, a storm hits, and the two discover an underground cave. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity starts to affect the couple. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes well past emotional intimacy.
The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, weaving in elements of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes in the middle of something grotesque). The director skillfully blends these components expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.
Layered Performances
A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they skillfully illustrate numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to chase only his floundering music career inexorably rises.
Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and removed from his support system. He dreads the idea of totally forfeiting his sense of self in Millie. This fear is amplified by the circumstance he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The director's cleverest decision is that he avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.
Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they still love each other. They find humor with each other, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But under the surface, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their relationship.
Symbolism and Metaphor
While the otherworldly presence in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and giving oneself over to another person, the symbolism does not come across as overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes provide a brilliant analogue to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together symbiotically.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which is best experienced firsthand, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about codependent relationships. It has been said that single viewers have understood the narrative as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ended up guiding them to resolve their issues.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the ending sow anxiety and horror, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in Tim or Millie and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “We could get through that together”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can undertake right now.
Together is streaming on Hulu as of this moment.
